New to little league baseball? With all the youth baseball leagues available, how do you choose?
Well, it depends what you're looking for...
Looking for a league that emphasizes sportsmanship and skill development without the intense competition, drafts, and tryouts of traditional little league teams? Programs offered through the YMCA or i9 Sports may be what you're looking for.
Want to introduce your youngster to the game while he's really young? Lil Sluggers offers programs for 2-8 year-olds that focus on the very basics.
T-ball is a great starting place for most beginners around 4-6 yrs old. At this level, kids hit the ball off of a batting tee. Once players get the hang of using a tee, they can move up to the next playing level called "coach pitch" where the coach tosses the ball to the batters.
As players get older and more experienced, they advance through playing divisions that progressively introduce more complex baseball rules and skills. Competition becomes more intense, and it's likely your child will have to tryout for a team.
For those players that become highly skilled and want to participate at a very competitive level, they may be chosen to play on a "Select" team. Select teams typically require a huge commitment from players and families in terms of time and money.
